Ways of reaching us.....
How many have you tried?
The Locks Inn is a thriving community owned pub on the banks of the River Waveney. It is in a remote location and on the busier days can attract hundreds of visitors. This can have an impact on our neighbours and can put severe pressure on the parking available. Whilst we welcome visitors arriving by car we are actively promoting alternative modes of travel.
How to get to the pub:-
Walking
We on the public rights of way network with a public footpath to Locks Lane in Shipmeadow and a public bridleway to Station Road in Geldeston. There is a very popular round trip walk from Beccles that takes around two and a half hours. The shorter walk from Beccles, on the Suffolk side of the river, takes 45 minutes via The Angles Way.
Cycling
We are a very popular destination for those arriving by bike. There is an extensive network of good cycling roads and paths on both sides of the river. Station Road, Geldeston, is part of the National Cycle Network (Routes 1, 30 & 31). We have a number of free cycling maps available at the pub.
Canoe & Paddleboard
There are multiple canoe and paddle board hire locations within reach of the pub.
There is a floating pontoon adjacent to the pub that makes getting in and out much easier, particularly at low tide. It is recommended that you remove your craft from the water and leave it in the parking area that has been provided by the River Waveney Trust.
Boat
The Broads Authority have 24 hour free moorings for boats adjacent to the pub. We are at the limit of The Broads navigation and only non-motorised craft are able to continue further upstream.
Big Dog Ferry
We are fortunate to have a ferry service from Beccles to the pub. The Big Dog Ferry runs for the summer half of the year between Beccles Lido and the pub. Booking is advisable. See Big Dog Ferry for details
Public Transport
There is a daytime bus service though Geldeston on the 581 Beccles to Diss service. Ask for The Wherry bus stop. It's a 15 minute walk to The Locks Inn.
A daytime bus service also operates through Shipmeadow on the 580 Great Yarmouth to Bungay service. Ask for Locks Lane in the dip of the main road (not a listed bus stop). It is a 15 walk across the marshes to The Locks Inn.
The main Norwich to Beccles bus service [X2,X21,X22 & 146] can also be used with a 2 mile walk from the bus stop on the A146 in Stockton (between Gillingham and Hales on the X2,X21,X22 timetable).
There is a railway station in Beccles and this can be used to get the pub in conjunction with The Big Dog Ferry, or with a walk, cycle or bus journey.
Car
We have a small car park adjacent to the pub. This is strictly for use by pub customers while they are at the pub. There is a larger car park 3 minutes walk away. At peak times we have an additional overflow car-park in a field 10 minutes up track. We try and keep 2 disabled parking spaces adjacent to the pub. At peak times we ask people to park at one of the remote car parks unless they have mobility issues.
The long track to the pub is never smooth and we don't intend to change this. We remove the worst of the potholes a couple of times a year but have found any more drastic improvements result in excessive speeds on the track.
